[English]

Emotional expression is a crucial component of marital intimacy, significantly influencing the quality of marital life and intimacy between couples. The present study aimed to describe common perceptions of women with low intimacy about the quality of emotional expression of their husbands. The study was conducted using a qualitative and phenomenological approach. The research sample included nine married women in Tehran in 2021, who experienced low marital intimacy and were selected through voluntary sampling. To determine the level of intimacy of women, the emotional dimension of the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships (PAIR) was used. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews until saturation was reached. Data were analyzed based on the seven-step method proposed by Colaizzi. The findings revealed five main themes including avoiding emotional expression, not paying attention to the needs of the spouse, limited and inappropriate expression, reactive emotional expression, and creating emotional barriers as a defense mechanism. The results suggested that women with low intimacy perceive their spouses as lacking appropriate self-disclosure and emotional expression, and they often view their husbands’ emotional expressions negatively. Consequently, they tend to avoid emotional expression or do it inappropriately.
