Communication Pattern in Different types of Family in Family Process and Content Model

Abstract

The Purpose of the study was to clarify the communication pattern in different family types in Family Process and Content Model (FPC Model). The sample consisted of 380 high school students in Shiraz. Self-Report Family Process Scale, Self-Report Family Content Scale, and Family Communication Pattern Questionnaire were used in this study. Based on the two first scale, four types of family in FPC Model was defined (healthy family, unhealthy family, and two types of problematic family). Based on the Family Communication Patterns Questionnaire, confirmation and conversation among family was assessed. To compare different family types in the FPC Model in confirmation and conversation, a one-way ANOVA was used. The results of Scheffe's test revealed that the mean score of conversation in healthy family was significantly greater than the means in the other types of family. In contrast, the mean of confirmation for unhealthy family was significantly greater than other types of family. In sum, the results of the research showed that healthy families provide a secure atmosphere for their members to present their idea, needs and requests.
