English

Marital infidelity poses a significant threat to the stability of family institutions and spousal relationships. Recently, this issue has garnered considerable attention in the fields of family studies and mental health. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of women who have endured marital infidelity and examine its impact on their quality of life. Participants included 15 women who sought counseling at family consultation centers in Behbahan County between December 2023 and September 2024. Despite experiencing infidelity, these women chose to remain in their marital relationships. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using purposive sampling until theoretical saturation was reached. The data were analyzed using Attride-Stirling’s thematic analysis approach, which involved a three-stage coding process. In the process of analysis, 70 basic themes, 22 organizing themes, and 8 global themes were extracted. The global themes included: physical ailments, emotional-cognitive disturbances, interpersonal turmoil, reactive patterns to infidelity, shifts in attitudes and self-concept, ambivalence regarding the continuation of marital life, the presence of sustaining factors within the family, and resilience strategies for coexisting with infidelity. Findings indicated that marital infidelity has multifaceted destructive effects across psychological, physical, cognitive, and familial dimensions, significantly impacting women's quality of life. Nevertheless, some participants managed to maintain psychological antifragility by utilizing internal and external resources. Through cognitive-emotional reconstruction, they were able to redefine and improve their quality of life to some extent. These findings provide a foundation for developing tailored therapeutic and supportive interventions to address the specific needs of this population.
