English

Social media platforms and their intelligent algorithms have become an inseparable part of daily life, shaping individuals' perceptions, expectations, and interactions through personalized content curation. Given the sensitivity and dynamic nature of marital relationships to external influences, examining the role of these algorithms in relationship quality is of particular importance. This study was conducted to explore couples’ lived experiences of the role of social media algorithms in the quality of marital relationships. The study employed a qualitative approach grounded in Thematic Analysis. The sample consisted of 18 participants (nine couples) from Qazvin Province, Iran, selected through purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria included a minimum of five years of married life, age between 25 and 45 years, and at least eight hours of daily use of algorithm-driven social media platforms. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis method. The analysis yielded 96 open codes, 28 subthemes, five main themes, and one core theme. The main themes included: 1) Erosion of psychological and emotional security in the relationship, 2) Distortion and transformation of marital standards and expectations, 3) Structural disruption in the couple relationship, 4) Attenuation of effective interaction, and 5) Distortion of the experience of physical and sexual intimacy under the shadow of idealized representations. The core theme indicated that algorithms, by distorting perception and meaning, gradually erode psychological, emotional, identity-related, and sexual bonds, while directing couples’ lifestyles toward a comparison-oriented and performative pattern. The findings suggest that, within the cultural context of Iran, this phenomenon not only directly influences marital satisfaction and couple intimacy but may also transform expectations, roles, and communication patterns. Accordingly, promoting media literacy, enhancing communication skills, and designing culturally informed counseling and intervention programs may mitigate negative effects and help reconstruct couple identity.
